Educational Building Project

Update – February 2020

Overview of Jamia Provision

  • Jamiatusalihat serves the full educational, residential, clothing, medical and catering needs of almost 2100 students from some of the most impoverished families and communities, including their small expenses.
  • Our institute has an annual cost of around £390,000 and the vital help that generous supporters like you provide is crucial to the girls and young women who study here.
  • In 2018-19, 280 students completed the advanced Islamic Aalima course (Fadhila), 55 students completed the basic Islamic Deeniyat course and 2 students completed Hifz (memorisation of the Qur’aan). In addition, students received courses in sewing, computer skills, basic English, hygiene, home sciences and basic food preparation.
  • For 2019-20, the institute received 1210 applications from across 15 states in India for under 500 places. Recently, to manage the significant demand for places at Jamia, the institute has invested in a new online admissions system.
  • Since 2017, the institute has also made significant savings in its annual expenditure by improving efficiency, eradicating wastage and streamlining administrative, catering and estate processes. This has enabled it to serve more students and improve the provision for the welfare of students.

Project Rationale

  • Currently, the institute uses five buildings – two for education, two for accommodation and one for both education and accommodation.
  • One of the buildings used for accommodation is not fit for purpose and subject to excessive leaking during monsoon rains, damp walls, electrical faults and serious disrepair.
  • In addition, due to the excessive demand for places at Jamia, the institute’s residential facilities lack adequate capacity. There is serious overcrowding in the bedrooms, often accommodating over 25 students in each, and a lack of adequate spacing between beddings and for storage of student belongings. This is having a serious impact on the health and comfort of students residing in the overcrowded facilities.
  • As a result:
    • The purpose is to demolish the building which is in serious disrepair and use this space to create an outdoor recreational space for the students to rest and play.
    • In addition, a new purpose-built block will be constructed exclusively for educational purposes. It will also have a garden at its centre for landscaping and aesthetics.
    • The existing classrooms will then be converted into bedrooms to expand the capacity of the accommodation and increase the comfort and space for students.
    • A perimeter wall will also be built to ensure that the new building and its surrounding grounds are fully secure.

Project Summary

A new educational building is being constructed at Jamiatussalihat.

  • Work commenced in November 2018 and is due to be completed by January 2022.
  • The new building will have a total capacity for 2400 students (each room has a capacity of around 40 students).
